Butterflies at Charles & Motee Rogers Reserve, Highfields 13/01/14

These beautiful collection of butterflies were taken at the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve at Highfields, South East Queensland today.  This reserve is one of the last remaining patches of remnant bushland in the Highfields Area and has been identified as an "endangered" ecosystem under the Queensland Vegetation Management Act of 1999.  The Reserve protects a small sample of the forest which once covered the Highfields Area and provides a vital habitat for many native species including the Koala and Sugar Gliders.

This reserve is currently under threat due to a Proposal by the Toowoomba Regional Council to clear a three metre wide walkway/cycle path through the reserve.  This reserve is only small as it is and any sort of land clearing would be a crime against the environment along with going against the wishes of Charles & Motee Rogers who donated the land to the Crows Nest Shire Council (now Toowoomba Regional Council) in the 1990's so it could be preserved and enjoyed by future generations.

An alternative location for the cyclepath/footpath is available in a designated footpath area beside the reserve along O'Brien road. This is a preferable option to provide access for local high-school students and residents and a much safer one also and would avoid any destruction of remnant reserve bushland in the Highfields Area.

Your support in petitioning the local Toowoomba Regional Council about this issue would be greatly appreciated. You can sign a quick on-line petition here: https://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/toowoomba-regional-council-preserve-charles-motee-rogers-bushland-reserve-at-highfields

  1. It is heartening on one hand to see people caring about conservation all over the world, but sad that these species have been so badly impacted... If you are ever interested, I have a small meme called Nature Notes. I think this is the 4th year, but small. It is for anything nature. I put up my post Monday nights...today by 11 pm EST.... This reserve looks lovely and I've added my signature to the petition to leave it as it is. I wish you all the best in your efforts.

    1. Thankyou so much for your lovely comment and for signing the petition. It seems the council has taken notice of this petition which was only over 3 days, however I will not celebrate until it is confirmed that the remnant bushland is preserved. Thank you so much for your support, I have been overwhelmed with the response from everyone. It is wonderful to know that others all feel the same way. Thankyou, Judi.
