Family Bushwalks of South-East Queensland 2nd Edition

This year I was honoured to be invited to contribute photos  and on the ground 'map-truthing' for the 2nd Edition of the book Family Bushwalks of South-East Queensland by Mark Roberts & Gillian Duncan.   I was thrilled to then be invited to submit a photo for the front cover of the 2nd edition, and to have it selected for the cover!  My photo of my children at the Palms National Park is now the new front-cover of this fabulous book suitable for anyone who likes exploring the out-doors as a family.  I am so very excited that the Charles & Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve at Highfields features in this new edition.

The new edition can be purchased online and from selected book stores:  http://www.organisedgrime.com.au/familybushwalks.php

Fireworks light up Peacehaven Park

FIREWORKS - PEACEHAVEN BOTANIC PARK CHRISTMAS CAROLS

My first attempt at photographing fireworks ever!  The photos could have been better focused, but it was a lot of fun practicing, and tricky when you are unsure who long the display will go for.  Fantastic night with amazing carols performed by the Toowoomba Coral Society youth choir and finishing with a spectacular fireworks display.... hope the possums and birds recover okay from the shock of the noise in their park.

Highfields Sunset

22 November 2016

Highfields Sunset.... I decided to go and test out my new wide-angle camera lens this afternoon, in a spot that I have noticed the sunset reflecting over two farm dams on the outskirts of Highfields.  Of course things didn't go to plan, with one leg of the tripod seizing on me, so these few practise pics are hand-held.  It is a very pretty spot, albeit a bit inaccessible.  These dams are always home to beautiful waterbirds and while I was taking these photos, Welcome Swallows were ducking and diving for insects over the water, making for a very picturesque evening, despite the traffic zooming past behind me.

Channel-billed Cuckoo's at Cabarlah

7 November 2016

While visiting a friend at Cabarlah, I witnessed two Channel-billed Cuckoo's land high in the tops of the large gum a silky-oak trees on the property.  I have been seeing and hearing these magnificent birds for a few weeks now, predominantly about 5.30 in the morning at our place, flying over-head with crows hot on their tail feathers, making sure they stay away.  My friend said that the Channel-bills have successfully laid their eggs in the Pied Currawong nest over many years at her property and she has witnessed the currawongs feeding these extra large demanding babies.

The photos aren't very clear as I only had my little 'point and shoot' camera which is a little rain damaged on hand, but I couldn't resist trying to capture their majestic stature while stopped for a short while.

Historic town of Hermannsburg N.T.

21 September 2016

HISTORIC TOWN OF HERMANNSBURG, CENTRAL AUSTRALIA, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Hermannsburg is an Aboriginal community 125 km km west southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Local Aboriginal people call it Ntaria.  Hermannsburg is the birthplace of well known Australian Aboriginal Artist Albert Namatjira (1902–1959).

The Hermannsburg Historic Precinct is an old German Lutheran Mission, that was established in 1877. The Hermannsburg Historic Precinct was included in the National Heritage List on 13 April 2006.

Hermannsburg Historic Precinct is open to visitors who can visit the old mission house, Albert Namatjira's house, a museum and an art gallery.

There is plenty to see and read about at this historic precinct.  The grounds are also home to some stunning old gum trees, with plenty of hollows, which were home to native Budgerigars and Australian Ringneck Parrots.  Wild Brumbys grazed on the outskirts of the precinct grounds.  The art gallery and tributes to Albert Namatjira were fantastic and very interesting.

Walpa Gorge, Kata Tjuta Northern Territory

19th September 2016

WALPA GORGE - KATA TJUTA, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Day trip to the stunning  Walpa Gorge at Kata Tjuta (aka The Olgas), within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Northern Territory, was breathtaking.  The terrain approaching the gorge was steep and rocky, with beautiful wildflowers on the sides of the walking track at the entrance to the gorge.  We were very lucky to see the Northern Territory in flower, after a large amount of rain prior to our visit. We watched in delight of birds of prey soaring above and then returning to their nest on the rockface of the gorge.  We had hoped to see parrots and wallabies and kangaroos, but there were so many people visiting the gorge - tourists just like us, that it was way to busy for any species that like seclusion to be on show.
